Title:

Data science in academia vs industry: Why not both?

Description:

Ever wondered how data science is different in academia vs industry? Why not ask someone who has been working on both for a while? Join us in an evening with Bryan Liu, a Senior Machine Learning Scientist at ASOS and a fourth-year PhD student, for some unique insights.

Bryan will share a bit about his career path, including how he ended up practising data science and machine learning in both academia and industry. He will also talk about what he loves and loathes on each side, and whether straddling both is the promising future or more a pipe dream. He will finally offer a few CV and interview tips for roles on both sides.

Speaker profile:

Bryan wears two hats. He works part-time at ASOS.com as a Senior Machine Learning Scientist, leading a cross-functional team of 12 scientists and engineers who leverage statistics and machine learning to solve business challenges in finance and marketing. He is also working part-time towards a PhD in the StatML CDT at Imperial and Oxford, looking into how we can improve our experimentation & measurement capabilities to enable us to make less biased data-informed decisions more quickly.
